The Process of Healing and Emotional Recovery: Our Workshop at Kripalu

The Process of Healing and Emotional Recovery: Our Workshop at Kripalu by Lauren BehrmanRecovering from divorce, and pressing the reset button on your life, requires persistence, mindfulness, and an ability to focus on internal response without pain, grief, or fear.

This is not an easy or swift process—it is necessary to create the time and space to feel the emotions and process the death of the marriage.

LIke with any type of loss, there are stages of grief that result in acceptance of the loss. It is important to go through that process in a healthy and productive way, without getting caught in blame and challenges of the past.

The goal is true emotional recovery.

Finding the Space to Recover

The first step is to find the space to view one’s self as a separate, independent individual who is not linked to the former partner—and not reactive to the former partner. The puppet must separate from the puppeteer.

While this separation can be frightening, it is also quite freeing. Disengaging from a negative dynamic and negative intimacy allows for a reboot and the ability to change course.

In our upcoming Kriaplu workshop, we provide not only the space needed, but the tools and practices that begin the process of separation, recovery, and forward progress. The workshop combines:

  • Mindful movement;
  • Writing and journaling;
  • Storytelling; and
  • Yoga Nidra (mindful meditation that regulates the nervous system).

These practices engage our minds, bodies, soul and environments. By offering a smorgasbord of coping techniques, participants will find the one(s) that works best in the healing process.

Mindful Movement

This aspect of the workshop will help participants group themselves and become present in the here and now by tuning into sensations in their body—which will free tension. Emotions are better regulated and a state of calm is more easily achieved.

Writing & Journaling

Writing is a vehicle for self-expression—a way to examine feelings in a more compassionate manner. It allows you to tune into yourself and push past defenses which in terms creates healthier narratives and positive self-attributions. In addition, writing helps us to prepare for difficult conversations.

Mediation

This practice helps to regulate the body, reduce response to stress, and become more calm. Learning to quiet the mind and focusing on breath is a tool that can accessed anywhere and at any time. In this way, it is quite a remarkable practice.

Music

Lastly, one of the workshop leaders is a singer-songwriter who is going to offer soulful music as a way of connecting to feelings. Music is empowering and inspirational, and we are hoping that participants will be empowered to write their own son as a part of the healing process.

The goal of this workshop is to create a supportive and empowering community in which to heal and provide a holistic view of the participants.  Here, we can teach and utilize a range of techniques that will help each person work through grief and look towards the future with hope.
